If you are willing to join Lyft and start making money as a driver, there are certain Lyft driving requirements both you and your vehicle must meet so you can start your career. Lyft Driver Requirements
Drivers must have a valid driver’s license (note that Lyft will also accept Temporary or out-of-state licenses). Drivers must have a smartphone that can download and run the Lyft Driver app. In order to have a smooth experience with the Lyft Driver app, it’s highly recommended that you use IOS 11 and Android 7.0 (Lollipop) or higher. Any older software might result in issues with the ability to give and receive rides.
Drivers must pass a DMV check. Any of the following cases may result in disqualification of the applicant for driving for Lyft:
- More than three moving violations in the past three years (such as accidents or traffic light violations). However, the number of these violations may vary by different states/regions as they may accept more or less moving violations/accidents
- A single major moving violation in the past three years (such as driving on a suspended license or reckless driving)
- A DUI or other drug-related driving violation in the past seven years, or longer in some jurisdictions
- A serious driving-related conviction in the past seven years (such as a hit-and-run or a felony involving a vehicle)
How Old Should I Be To Become A Lyft Driver?
There is also an age limit for drivers who want to join Lyft. Normally, the minimum age for drivers is 21 years old, but different states or cities may have their age limit up to 25 years. So its recommended that drivers check the age requirements for joining Lyft in the region they want to drive in.
How To Drive For Lyft?
The first thing you must do to join Lyft as a driver is to create a Lyft account. You can do it by using the Lyft app or website. Then, through your account, you will enter the required info including your name, phone number, and email address, then submit all the info needed to ensure you meet the Lyft driving requirements for joining as a driver.
After passing all the checks that Lyft requires, you will be added to the new applicant’s waitlist. As soon as there is a spot available for new drivers, Lyft will notify the applicants who have a request on the waitlist. When you are removed from the waitlist, you can follow the remaining steps to get approval for your documents and start driving for Lyft.
Lyft Insurance Requirements
While Lyft will provide its drivers with insurance, you still need personal insurance because there are different times that Lyft insurance will cover its drivers. It is required that you provide Lyft with a valid insurance card with your name on the policy. It also depends on your region as some states don’t require you to have your name printed on the policy. You may upload your documents and Lyft will notify you if you need to acquire a “declarations page” from your insurance company with your name.
Lyft Driver Background Check
Note: due to some court and DMV closure caused by COVID-19, some driver’s background checks may be delayed.
Drivers need to provide a valid social security number to Lyft in order to undergo their criminal background check which is conducted by a third-party company, Checkr, Inc. after the result of your background check is assessed against applicable regulations and Lyft’s internal safety criteria, you will be able to join Lyft if there are none of the things below reported in your background check:
- Are listed on the National Sex Offender Registry database
- Have been convicted at any time of a disqualifying violent crime (such as homicide, kidnapping, human trafficking, arson, burglary, carjacking, robbery, or aggravated assault)
- Have been convicted at any time of a sexual offense (such as rape, sexual assault, or child pornography)
- Have been convicted at any time of an act of terror
- Have been convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs in the past seven years, or longer in some jurisdictions
- Have been convicted of a disqualifying fraud-related offense in the past seven years for most jurisdictions, although this time frame may be longer, or shorter, in certain jurisdictions
- Have been convicted of a disqualifying drug-related offense in the past seven years for most jurisdictions, although this time frame may be longer, or shorter, in certain jurisdictions
- Have been convicted of a disqualifying theft or property damage offense in the past seven years for most jurisdictions, although this time frame may be longer, or shorter, in certain jurisdictions.
Still, you can be found ineligible to drive for Lyft based on different types of crimes as the list above is not inclusive of all disqualifying convictions.
